Kushti

Kushti, or Pehlwani, is a traditional form of Indian wrestling that traces its roots back to ancient times, including references in the epic Mahabharata. Wrestlers, known as Pehlwans, train in Akharas—sandy pits that double as spiritual and physical training grounds. The sport is not just about physical strength but also involves strict dietary routines, discipline, and a spiritual lifestyle, emphasizing respect and dedication.

In practice, Kushti combines rigorous physical training with a focus on grappling techniques aimed at pinning an opponent's shoulders to the ground. Wrestlers follow a protein-rich diet including milk, ghee, and almonds, which supports their intensive training sessions. The regimen also avoids harmful substances and promotes overall well-being, underscoring the sport’s holistic approach to physical fitness and character building.

Despite facing challenges from modern sports and shifts in cultural values, Kushti retains its cultural significance in many Indian states like Maharashtra, Haryana, and Uttar Pradesh. It fosters community spirit and is celebrated in festivals and competitions that draw large crowds. Efforts to modernize training and integrate Kushti into international sports platforms are helping to revive interest among younger generations, ensuring its place in both the heritage and future of Indian sports.
